This the first Finnish university in Finland and the world was  funded in a very exceptional manner, through a fund-raising campaign. The motto of the university, founded on Kalevala Day, 28 February, 1920, “From a Free People to Free Science” reflects the spirit of the new independent republic and the will of the 22,000 donors.

The teaching, research and science conducted at universities has greatly influenced the development and history of Finnish society. They have created the prerequisites for our welfare state, for increased productivity and internationalisation.
