A special euro coin honouring the protection of nature

The first Finnish special coin of 2023 highlights the importance of Finnish nature protection legislation and biodiversity.

Finland's first Nature Conservation Act, enacted in 1923, was ahead of its time and continues to enjoy a central role within the 100-year-old law.

  • Finland's first Nature Conservation Act 1923
  • Uncirculated and wear-protected collector’s item
  • A historically low mintage – only 400,000 coins

The Nature Conservation Act is one of the most important means of safeguarding Finland’s natural diversity. Its significance was already understood one hundred years ago.

The beetle (Tragosoma depsarium) depicted on the obverse side of the special euro coin reminds us of the importance of the Nature Conservation Act. The longhorn beetle is classified as a highly endangered species in Finland. Beetles work at various levels of the ecosystem and are thereby an important group in terms of the functioning of biodiversity as a whole.

Helsinki-based designer Sandra Prami has designed the illustrative theme.
